Crisis Continuum of Care

The Crisis Continuum is not only the most effective method for handling crises but also the least restrictive and most cost-efficient. By implementing this continuum, communities can reduce their reliance on jails, emergency departments, and inpatient settings by stepping in earlier during a crisis, ensuring timely assistance is available to those in need.

Since its initiation in July 2022, the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has become a cornerstone of the Crisis Continuum, answering over 10 million calls from individuals in crisis. This vital resource addresses the "Someone to Call" aspect of the continuum, providing an immediate, accessible line of support to people facing severe mental health or substance use challenges.

However, for about 20% of those callers, phone support alone is insufficient. In these cases, mobile crisis teams are deployed as the "Someone to Respond" component of the continuum. These teams are equipped to handle crises on-site and are trained in behavioral health emergency responses. If a crisis cannot be resolved in the field, the next step is to transfer the individual to a "Somewhere to Go" facility, such as a crisis stabilization center, which plays a crucial role in stabilizing the person and linking them to follow-up care. Initium Health actively collaborates with communities to identify and address gaps in their crisis services, working towards comprehensive solutions that include establishing new crisis stabilization facilities.
